Leadership Training for Māori in Public Health

Public Health refers to population health, health promotion, health protection as opposed to individual care

Leadership Training for Māori in Public Health

In 2024 there will be two cohorts available. Participants must register for one cohort only and remain with that cohort. This training programme will introduce a variety of key themes and concepts relating to Māori health and development in order to encourage greater leadership amongst Māori working in Public Health.

Digital will facilitate this programme, which will include some of the country’s foremost leaders in different aspects of leadership and Māori health.

This programme has been specifically designed for Māori.

This programme aims to:

  • Increase participants’ understanding of a broad number of ‘cutting edge’ leadership issues;

  • Provide a safe, but challenging, environment for participants to explore issues related to Māori public health; and,

  • Strengthen participants’ networks across the country by fostering support, mentoring, strategy sharing and retention of Māori staff in the public health sector.

The wānanga consists of 8 days in total (four 2-day wānanga) and will be held at Ngā Hau e Whā Marae, Cambridge.

The programme sessions are intended to stimulate learning, discussion, debate and, ultimately, action. Therefore, the sessions will utilise a wide range of teaching styles most responsive to programme content, interest and energy levels, prior knowledge base, and the learning models of participants.

Key themes and concepts explored in the programme include:

  • Reflecting on yourself as a leader;

  • Contemporary public health issues;

  • Understanding Māori self development and determination;

  • Communication, facilitation and how to build influence and credibility;

  • Developing and implementing projects;

  • Tools and strategies for leaders; and,

  • Exploration of tikanga Māori.

A project will also be undertaken outside the wānanga.

Participant Eligibility
For participants to be eligible for the programme, they shall be:

  • Māori; and,

  • working in a Public Health funded contract from either the Ministry of Health, or Te Whatu Ora, or Te Aka Whai Ora. (To clarify - Public Health is referred to those working in health promotion, health protection, or population health as opposed to individuals focus. Public Health is not any contract funded by health); and,

  • committed to contributing to health outcomes for Māori; and,

  • committed to attending all four noho marae; and,

  • have the support of your employer (if applicable); and,

  • committed to completing the programme.

Most of the programme costs are covered, including:

  • accommodation at the marae on the Thursday night;

  • meals during the wānanga; and,

  • training resources.

The costs that you and your organisation need to cover include:

  • your release time;

  • your travel to attend the programme; and,

  • a small koha (between $10 - $20 max) on Day One for the marae as part of the pōwhiri process.

Those intending to travel on the Wednesday are to organise their own accommodation and food.
